We spent five days with Molly’s dad Ron and his partner Carolyne in Puerto Vallarta.

Mascota and San Sebastian del Oeste

We took a few extra days to climb up into the mountains to San Sebastian del Oeste and Mascota. We will not regret getting off the beaten path to see an unspoiled town in the mountains on the night of the Virgen de Guadalupe. It was absolutely wonderful.

Trip to Long Beach

Molly wanted to escape Seattle for Thanksgiving. She chose to take us to Anchorage Cottages (misnamed as this is a treacherous coast with no anchorages nearby) in Long Beach, WA.

We had a good time. We explored the beach. Spirit leaped, bounded, and sprinted all over. Daniel discovered fire making (in the fireplace), I cooked, Camille sewed with her new machine, and Molly did what pleased her most.

Family Celebration of Camille’s 12th Birthday

Camille loves to celebrate her birthday. As part of her birthday, she wanted to be taken to a conveyor belt sushi (kaiten) type of place for lunch. This strikes us as odd, as she rarely eats fish and certainly would not deign to eat it raw. I think she is caught up in a friend’s recommendation and the attraction of the conveyor belt. We’re game, so off we go.

As one might expect (knowing Camille), she eschews all the fish and tucks into cucumber rolls, a sweet rice wrapped in bean curd, egg rolls, and custard (the latter two seem genuinely un-Japanese, but who am I to know?). But, she loved it. I think the conveyor belt was the draw. Daniel tries shrimp and eats the sweets. Molly and I have sushi, of course.

Daniel gave Camille a present in a can to throw her off the scent. She had asked him for a duct tape wallet (his specialty these days).

After sushi, we went to Pike Place Market to shop for dinner and explore.

Labor Day with Hazel and Simon

We took a long weekend trip with Hazel and Simon. We met up in Bremerton and the girls made a friend on another boat – Piper. All had tons of fun.

End of sailing vacation

We went to Echo Bay on Sucia Island for two nights, and then Rosario Resort for our final night, where we snatched the last mooring buoy. Finally, onto Anacortes, to switch with our boat partners Keith and Kathy.

Skull Island, Roche Harbor, and Reid Harbor

After departing Fisherman Bay, Molly had a bug to explore something new. We decided to try Skull Island in Massacre Bay off Orcas Island. We launched the kayak and the kids went to shore. Molly and I stayed on the boat for a bit.

There was some commotion on Skull Island and we saw a dog running fast toward the south end. It chased a four point buck into the water. The dog wouldn’t give up and barked and chased the deer in the water. Ultimately, the deer outswam the dog and the dog returned.

We spent the night off Blind Island near the Shaw and Orcas Island ferry terminals. The following day, we went to Roche Harbor. We met up with Lars, a friend of Daniel’s, and took him and his dad for a brief sail in the harbor.

Then, on to Reid Harbor on Stuart Island. The kids love Cemetery and Gossip Islands at its mouth. They have renamed them Banana and Banana II Islands for the small succulent plants that live there (they look like tiny bundles of bananas.

There was some interpretive dancing on Banana Island II.

iPhone stealing stuffed animal

Camille brought her sewing supplies along. She sewed a stuffed animal she called Munchkin. She told a story about how Munchkin lost his magical iPhone and would be stealing one. She made a special sleeveless jacket for Munchkin with an iPhone pouch.

Munchkin, after successfully stealing Molly’s iPhone, branched out into other criminal enterprises, stealing the dry stores.

Fisherman Bay

Having negotiated the Strait of Juan de Fuca on a less foggy day, we approached the San Juan Islands via Cattle Pass which separates Lopez and San Juan Islands.

We stopped for a while at American Camp on the south end of San Juan Island, and then went to Fisherman Bay. We knew Lila and her family’s band were playing the next day and we wanted to catch the concert.

We were surprised when we saw Lulu and Michiko there. Camille was pleased to hang out with her friends while on vacation.

Bumper Boats

First full day with the Sas

We arrived Saturday at the Sas. On Sunday, they took us to Rockport, MA, and then to Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester.

Father’s Day

We went for a day sail to Blakely Harbor for Father’s Day. Dad enjoyed receiving presents under way.

Memorial Day Weekend Trip

For the Memorial Day weekend, We all took off the Friday before and made it a four day weekend. On Friday, we sailed to Blake Island and asked to raft up. We stayed put for three nights (very unusual for us). The kids loved playing ashore at will.

Visit with Tami et al

We had a visit with Molly’s grad school friend Tami and her family in Pasadena. Jan and Bret were visiting, so there were lots of kids to go around.

Leaving Coronado and La Jolla

The weather turned sunny and warm as we left Coronado Island and visited La Jolla. The kids spent a lot of time in the water at La Jolla Cove.
