Here’s a glimpse into Daniel World. While Molly was doing yard work, Daniel positioned himself nearby. He made himself a nest complete with comics books galore. He also snuggled with Spirit. He often self-comforts in these ways.

Trip to Walla Walla

We just got back from a trip to see our friends Dave and Melissa in Walla Walla. Molly has known Melissa for about 20 years – they met in Santa Barbara and roomed together in Portland where I met the two in 1993. Subsequently, Melissa moved to Seattle and we moved there a few years later. Weirdly, we ended up living only a few blocks away in Ballard. At some point, they soured on Seattle and moved some 5 hours drive to the east.

We don’t get to see them as often these days and this weekend was a real treat. They put us up in their MIL upstairs which they rent out as a vacation retreat. Thanks, guys!

We enjoyed good food and good wine (Walla Walla is known for the latter), and most importantly good company.

There was a side trip to see Waitsburg and Dayton, which are both in the southern end of the Palouse. I enjoyed seeing both small towns, as I’ve been very curious about them.

Spirit was welcome and that was very nice. We didn’t have to worry about getting a sitter for her and she joined us for the weekend.

Dirty Dog

Spirit loves to run. She loves to chase tennis balls. And when she’s hot, she loves to wallow in the mud. As a result, there is a lot of this afterward…

She tries to resist and I try to wash. It’s like dancing with a reluctant partner. We both get soapy and wet. Hopefully at least one of gets cleaner.

Spirit has a “birthday”

We adopted Spirit from the Seattle Animal Shelter last January. Not knowing her actual birthday, we decided to celebrate it on the day she was adopted – 1/11/09. We were a bit late this year. But Spirit didn’t seem to mind.

Spirit laps up the broth I made her from the chicken parts left over. She loved it.

Mother’s Day 2009

It was Molly’s 11th Mother’s Day today – I count the year when Molly was pregnant with Camille and she is nine – so that’s nine years plus the one when Camille was a few months old and one where Molly was pregnant. As usual, we went to Discovery Park for a picnic by the chapel over looking Puget Sound. Yet again, the weather cooperated.

I walked to the car to deposit the picnic stuff and came back to see Camille 30 feet off the ground. I shouldn’t be surprised, but I have acrophobia. Thus, I have a visceral response to being (especially) or even seeing someone so high off the ground without a net, mat, harness, etc.

Teaching Spirit to swim

Spirit bounds from the water after retrieving a stick. I finally convinced her to retrieve a stick from deep water, this simultaneously solving several problems: how to teach her to swim, how to teach her to retrieve, and how to get her the exercise she desperately needs. I’ll have to reinforce this behavior, but I think I can get her to live up to the Labrador retriever reputation. At 2, she should have come with these skills, but sadly she did not.

I’ve taken to calling Spirit a bog monster. Here she frolics in an urine soaked mud pit that forms at the Golden Garden off leash area. She managed to convince some other dogs to join her in the fun. Spirit’s the black blur on the right. Thanks to Gordon for mentioning the iPhone app Quad Camera on his blog. The $2 is worth it for the fun factor.

Are We Wackos, Dog Lovers, or Both?

I’m unsure of our mental status (specifically my own), but we adopted a two year old female (who’s likely to have had a litter, but has since been “fixed”) dog from the Seattle Animal Shelter. She’s very energetic and her name is appropriately Spirit. I love dogs, but I’m not sure I need one more thing to care for. She appears to be a mixed breed (mutt); I think she might be part black Labrador Retriever, but who knows?
