We celebrated Daniel’s entry into his second decade. He turned a big 10 years old this year. We went to Laser Quest in Federal Way and had pizza at Snoose Junction afterwards – a winning combination!

Family Celebration of Camille’s 12th Birthday

Camille loves to celebrate her birthday. As part of her birthday, she wanted to be taken to a conveyor belt sushi (kaiten) type of place for lunch. This strikes us as odd, as she rarely eats fish and certainly would not deign to eat it raw. I think she is caught up in a friend’s recommendation and the attraction of the conveyor belt. We’re game, so off we go.

As one might expect (knowing Camille), she eschews all the fish and tucks into cucumber rolls, a sweet rice wrapped in bean curd, egg rolls, and custard (the latter two seem genuinely un-Japanese, but who am I to know?). But, she loved it. I think the conveyor belt was the draw. Daniel tries shrimp and eats the sweets. Molly and I have sushi, of course.

Daniel gave Camille a present in a can to throw her off the scent. She had asked him for a duct tape wallet (his specialty these days).

After sushi, we went to Pike Place Market to shop for dinner and explore.

Father’s Day

We went for a day sail to Blakely Harbor for Father’s Day. Dad enjoyed receiving presents under way.

Trip to Coronado Island

For a special treat, we all went to Coronado Island to spend a few nights. We stayed across the street from the Hotel del Coronado.

On the way, we stopped by UCSD to visit Molly’s and my old stomping grounds. We both lived in San Diego, had relationships with UCSD, overlapped in time, but didn’t know each other at the time. We met in Portland, OR.

In a continuing tradition, we had the Yang/Williams over for T-day. In a remarkable turn of events, I actually cooked a turkey!

Today was a holiday from school and there was no childcare. Molly had the day off, as did I. So, it was a perfect day for this birthday recipe:

Take 1 girl turning 11 (and very excited about it).
Invite the entire fifth grade class, boys and girls, alike.
Secure a gymnasium at the Ballard Boys and Girls Club with lots of balls.
Hire a B&G counselor with skills in games and herding kids.
Admit kids with hormones (they’re fifth graders!).

Mix for two solid hours until multiple injuries occur and kids sweat a lot.

The result – much happiness!!! ;) There were also a few scrapes, bruises, and heightened emotions, but that was expected.

There was cake, of course, but that was scarfed down at the end in less than 10 minutes.

Poppa Ron comes for a visit

Molly’s father, whom the kids call Poppa Ron, came to visit. He was able to mix business with pleasure by signing up for a Seattle seminar. Just before we went to Etta’s for dinner, we took this picture. Daniel was behaving like his hero Calvin.

Father’s Day 2010

We usually have a Father’s Day picnic. This year, the weather sucked! It was a steady light rain and the outdoor plans were squashed. So, Molly suggested a picnic on the Bremerton ferry with a short outing in Bremerton. It was a lovely idea. After being feted at breakfast, we trudged downtown.

Trip to Walla Walla

We just got back from a trip to see our friends Dave and Melissa in Walla Walla. Molly has known Melissa for about 20 years – they met in Santa Barbara and roomed together in Portland where I met the two in 1993. Subsequently, Melissa moved to Seattle and we moved there a few years later. Weirdly, we ended up living only a few blocks away in Ballard. At some point, they soured on Seattle and moved some 5 hours drive to the east.

We don’t get to see them as often these days and this weekend was a real treat. They put us up in their MIL upstairs which they rent out as a vacation retreat. Thanks, guys!

We enjoyed good food and good wine (Walla Walla is known for the latter), and most importantly good company.

There was a side trip to see Waitsburg and Dayton, which are both in the southern end of the Palouse. I enjoyed seeing both small towns, as I’ve been very curious about them.

Spirit was welcome and that was very nice. We didn’t have to worry about getting a sitter for her and she joined us for the weekend.

Mother’s Day 2010

It was our 11th annual Mother’s Day celebration. As is our custom, we went to Discovery Park for a picnic. Camille brought her unicycle. We went to the “sand pit” after the picnic to play.
