Tonight, Camille amazed us all with her “daring-do”. She performed in her final year at Whittier Elementary School. We’re so proud of her! She was offered the anchor spot in the program and stepped up to the plate to perform.

Camille, my favorite Junior Aerialista, performed yet again in front a very appreciative audience. Partly because of my pressure, Lara Paxton Raspberry, her teacher, agreed to put together an event to showcase her students – 5 kids and 3 adults. She tied it together with a fundraiser for the Aerialistas big break – a professional tour in Spain. They will be paid, but not well. It was synergistic; Camille got an audience and the Aerialistas got some cash.

As a bonus, Camille’s grandmother (my mother Helen) was in attendance. Also, Camille had strong support from her friends, Kasey, Sarah and Lucy. Sarah was her aerial partner earlier in the year.

Jeff got picked from the audience to be a juggling “volunteer”. It must be his congenial manner that made it happen.

There was a snag in the audio (a pause and a restart), so I overdubbed the video with the intended audio track. There is a bit of an echo between the overdubbed music and the video’s audio – sorry, I couldn’t quite sync it up with my free video editing software.

Junior Aerialistas at Moisture Festival 2010!

Camille and her friends with the Junior Aerialistas got a chance to perform for Moisture Festival in Seattle. It’s the big time for them. It was a benefit performance for AerLift – an organization started by their teacher Lara Paxton Raspberry (founding member of the Aerialistas – “The Original Aerial Girl Gang”) to benefit needy children in far away lands.

[Ahem - a little aside from this proud papa: the girls pulled off a fantastic performance! They were awesome! Every move was nailed and you can hear the crowd go wild. Camille and the other girls got a lot of compliments, which they richly deserved. Personally, I thought they were the stars of the evening. - end of editorial]

Last year, they performed in front of several hundred people at the Seattle Center with Circus Contraption with Circus Contraption (a now defunct local performance group) and had a blast. I think this performance was more polished and came off well. (the lighting was not great, but I still loved it.)

I had a bit of trouble as there was ambient light coming in from the windows and the mirror behind the performance space caused the autofocus of the video camera to focus on the farthest object, some beams in the mirror, rather than the girls. Sorry.

Trip to Teatro Zinzanni

Camille has been interested in the circus arts for some time now. She trained for a while at SANCA (School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts) in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. For the past nearly two years she’s been training with Lara Paxton (formerly part of Circus Contraption), founder of the Aerialistas, now co-located with Emerald City Trapeze. She loves the aerial arts!

She asked at some point where she could see more aerial performances. We had been, a few years ago, for my birthday, to Teatro Zinzanni. We mentioned this to her and described the show. She was very excited. However, we also knew that it cost $100+ per person, as it included a meal and service. Molly threw up a road block very quickly. Molly said, “You can’t go until you’re 10!”

So, here we are, with Camille turning 10, that we must fulfill a promise. Off we went, dutifully, to see a lovely show. No pictures here of the show (very prohibited), but some pictures of before and after. We all enjoyed it immensely.

Sailing with Sarah’s Family

We invited Sarah, Camille’s aerial partner and friend, and her family out for a sail. It was a lovely evening, not much wind, but the sun made an appearance and we all enjoyed our time together.

The concept was to have Sarah and Sarah’s mom, Diana, meet us at the boat and Daniel, Camille, and I would sail to Bell Harbor Marina to pick up Diana’s husband Ron and my wife Molly to sail back to Elliot Bay Marina, as both of them work downtown. Unfortunately, Molly had a meeting until 5:30 at UW on that day and she drove to meet us. But, all worked out well in the end and we had a good time. As it turned out Diana and Ron were experienced with boats and enjoyed the time thoroughly.

I broke out the old 35 film camera, because the little digital camera wasn’t cutting it in the dark Center House. The flash just wouldn’t make it out to the performers 20-40 feet away. Unfortunately, I didn’t go get fresh film right away, so some of the pictures were taken on 2 year old film and look that way.

The pictures are from 12/30/08 – the last night of Circus Contraption’s run at Winterfest in the Seattle Center.
