Matia Island

August 12th, 2010 · by David · No Comments

I have fond memories of being in the unnamed southeast cove on Matia Island.  When Molly and I had a Catalina 22 (think crude camping in a floating plastic bucket), we spent two very pleasant days and nights here in the mid-1990s.  The wind blew from the northwest and we were completely protected.  If I remember correctly, one of those nights we had the cove to ourselves.

The cruising guides say much of the island is off limits to visitors (excepting a cove on the opposite side of the island), but signs on shore showed a path and gave us a severe warning about not lighting any fires (that was not in our plans).  We hiked on a loop trail to Rolfe Cove on the NW end through old growth (but not virgin) forests.  Banana slugs were abundant, as were spider webs, as we were likely the first hikers on the trail that day.  There was a strong NW wind blowing and in talking to boaters tied to the dock at Rolfe Cove, we learned that they had a bouncy night.  The wife seemed surprised about it.  After some further discussion, it became apparent that they had little information about the winds and weather.  I was surprised.  Perhaps I just take being aware of the weather while boating for granted.  I just assume all competent skippers check the weather before starting the day.  I ended up doling out some travel advice to the motor boaters about where to go to avoid discomfort.  Later in the trip, I saw them in the distance while anchoring in Conover Cove on Wallace Island in Canada.

I was interviewed by my daughter:
