Arrival at Juayua

March 31st, 2009 · by David · No Comments

We took the bus from Los Cobanos to Sonsonate (a late sprawling city) and on up the mountains to the town of Juayua.

After a lunch of Mexican food (slightly weird) we are having a siesta. The kids are watching “Kung Fu Panda”. Molly is napping. I am reflecting on our travels.

The buses are like Mexican buses. They are old US school buses (mostly Bluebirds) with elaborate tinting and decoration in front. Fortunately, there are very few smokers here, but loud music, no A/C, many stops, very low cost ($0.50 an hour), and packed buses are still the norm.

The local Spanish has a few oddities. They accentuate the vowels – bueno becomes “bwaaay-no”. They say “va” (“bah!”) a lot. I think it means OK.

The tortillas are made with corn masa as they are in Mexico, but they are 3-4 times thicker. To my taste, they end up undercooked in the middle and lousy for wrapping.

Even though we are further South and in a hotter climate, spicy foods (hot) are rare. There are a few jalapenos in some pickled side dishes. The hottest dish I had was rooster soup. It is a bit of a specialty in Suchitoto. It was delicious. René said that it was born of roosters that could no longer fight. It is marinated in spices for days, then made into soup.
