We traveled from Suchitoto to Los Cobanos by taxi. We stayed at the Los Cobanos Village Lodge. The lodge itself was nice enough. It had a small but clean pool, the staff was helpful, and the rooms were adequate. Walking out the 12 foot high wall/barricade topped with broken glass embedded in cement, we could see the beach. The lodge had about 25 feet of waterfront which was hemmed in by fishing boats. The view was nice as long as you didn’t look at the trash, diapers, and other gross things on the beach.
We told locals where we were staying and they seemed to think we’d be much more comfortable at the nearby behemoth, all-inclusive, white folks only, insular Decameron Resort. Or maybe you’d enjoy the Salvadoran jewel of Las Veraneras. We said we wanted to mix it up with the locals. They looked at us like we had two heads.

I love this sign because of its irony. Loosely translated it says, "Welcome to Los Cobanos. We are a clean community and we protect the coral reef..." The beach was absolutely filthy with dirty diapers, plastic trash, and worse rolling around in the surf and up on the beach. I refused to swim in it.

dogs fighting on the beach - none of them were neutered
nearby Las Veraneras had a lovely beach club with kid friendly pool
I met a fellow named Franscisco on the beach at Los Cobanos while he was arranging a fishing excursion for the following weekend (Semena Santa – Easter week). He graciously invited us to spend some time with him at the nearby Las Veraneras Resort. He owned a small vacation home there and it gave him privileges in their beach club, which was very nice. He was very kind to us and showed us a side of El Salvador we would have never seen if he hadn’t been so generous.
Mari Carmen, Fransisco, Francisco Jr., and we enjoyed a hot day by staying as wet as possible.
