We took the bus from Los Cobanos to Sonsonate (a late sprawling city) and on up the mountains to the town of Juayua.
After a lunch of Mexican food (slightly weird) we are having a siesta. The kids are watching “Kung Fu Panda”. Molly is napping. I am reflecting on our travels.
The buses are like Mexican [...]

Cajones!
March 31st, 2009 · No Comments
In the old days before glue in bottles, students in El Salvador would be required to bring some of these “cajones” to school as a glue. Our guides were a bit red-faced in explaining it. We were on a tour to Los Chorros outside of Juayua when we ran across them.

Juayua, El Salvador

This town had a name that was difficult for us to wrap our tongue around. It is pronounced “why-you-a”.
It’s a lovely little colonial town up in the mountains near coffee plantations. Unfortunately, the coffee had all been harvested when we got there. It’s mostly done in December, January, and February depending on the elevation, sun [...]

Snorkel!
March 30th, 2009 · No Comments
Today, we went snorkeling with Saul. He lives next to the Los Cobanos Village Lodge. I think he is Francisco’s fishing guide.
He warned us that the visibility was poor and he was correct. He headed West from Los Cobanos to a 100 year old wreck. At 15 feet there were some interesting fish but there [...]

A very kind Salvadorian named Francisco Castillo befriended us. We met him on the beach at Los Cobanos within 30 minutes of our arrival. He offered to show us his vacation home in a nearby gated community. It had a private beach club attached which he also showed us. The kids swam in a large [...]

Los Cobanos

We travelled from Suchitoto to Los Cobanos by taxi. We stayed at the Los Cobanos Village Lodge. The lodge itself was nice enough. It had a small but clean pool, the staff was helpful, and the rooms were adequate. Walking out the 12 foot high wall/barricade topped with broken glass embedded in cement, we could [...]

Camille in repose.
We arrived in Los Cobanos yesterday evening. We’re staying at Los Cobanos Village Lodge. The kids swing in a hammock.
We met a man from the capital who befriended us yesterday. He plans to take us back to his private beach club today (Las Veraneras). The kids swam in their pool yesterday and loved [...]

Suchitoto Tour
March 28th, 2009 · No Comments
We took a tour out of Suchitoto with an English Speaking guide named Rene this morning. First we went on a boat on Lago Suchitlan to “Bird Island”. There were many roosting cormorants which the locals call “pig birds” due to their cries.
Later we toured a dry waterfall called Los Tercios that was interesting because [...]

Papusas!
March 27th, 2009 · No Comments
We had dinner at a very simple “papuseria” on the square in Suchitoto. Papusas are a stuffed corn tortilla and a national dish in El Salvador. The chef puts cheese, beans, and/or meat into some masa (corn meal dough) and then fries them on a griddle. This was served on a plate to be eaten [...]

Suchitoto

We hastily changed our travel plans to spend our first night in Suchitoto. Molly originally favored the capital city of San Salvador, but I was lukewarm to the idea. Someone we know has done missions to Suchitoto, so we decided to see where she’d been. It was a lovely old colonial town. Sadly, it saw [...]
