Daniel, my son who suffers the fate of being second born, has many wonderful traits. He is a fantastic non-fiction reader. We worked on reading his daily quota of 20 minutes today. I forgot to load books into the car to read during his sister’s aerial lessons, so we went to library and picked out a book. He requested the following:
- a non-fiction book
- a book about amphibians
- read the book in a tree
So, I, being the slightly (and only slightly, being the consummate cranky curmudgeon) obliging father granted his wish. After all, the reading was compulsory; the rest was negotiable. The librarian at the Fremont library was awesome (as most Seattle librarians are); she found us a book that he liked very quickly.
Often, Daniel and I struggle about his obligations around homework. Here, we reached a compromise. He read (my and the school’s requirement) and I let him choose the book and the setting. Thankfully, the beautiful October weather cooperated.
